This is a software music tool built ground-up in Java. Built around granular synthesis techniques and polar traversals of the Mandelbrot set, this was originally designed as a means of composing my capstone piece for my Music Composition minor at NCSU which was featured in the iPearl Immersion Theater in Hunt Library. I continued streamlining and adding features as my needs evolved alongside experimentation with new musical ideas.
Created by using fractal traversals as a probability distribution for the placement of grains (see granular synthesis) on the frequency and time axes. Several tracks with different parameters are layered together.
The following piece was created from an improvised piano recording I made and then subjected to what I would describe as "spectral shearing" (think shearing forces). The sound is divided into several frequency bands and then each is individually time-warped using a fractal traversal as input.
